At least 11 people are feared dead and dozens injured in a grisly road accident involving a bus and a lorry at Ahero on the Kisumu-Nairobi road on Monday morning.

The accident, which occurred around 5:00 AM, involved a Eldoret Express bus traveling from Kisumu to Nairobi and a lorry heading in the opposite direction.

According to witnesses, the bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with the oncoming lorry. The impact of the crash was so great that both vehicles were extensively damaged.

“The scene is horrific,” said a police officer who was at the scene. “There are bodies scattered everywhere and many people are injured.”

Emergency services were quick to respond to the accident, but the number of casualties is expected to rise.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that speeding and reckless driving may have been factors.

“We are urging all motorists to be cautious on the roads and to obey traffic rules,” said a spokesman for the Kenya National Highways Authority.

This is the latest in a series of deadly road accidents in Kenya. In December, at least 19 people were killed in a crash involving a matatu and a truck on the Webuye-Kitale highway.

The Kenyan government has launched a number of initiatives to improve road safety, but accidents continue to occur with alarming frequency.
