Blow to Tusker hours after edging Homeboyz to win KPL title as Matano reveals his next move

Hours after Tusker head coach Robert Matano fired his side to a second consecutive Kenyan Premier League title following an emphatic 2-0 win over Posta Rangers in an action-packed thriller at Ruaraka Complex, Nairobi on Sunday, reports have emerged that Matano is planing to ditch the breweries.

Addressing the media immediately after the match, Matano revealed that he might be on his way out of the club due to sabotage and frustration from the club officials.

“There is someone who doesn’t want me in the team. But I’m happy I finally proved him wrong by winning the title. I understand my coaching role very well and it’s not by sheer luck that I’ve won titles. I’ve mastered my job very well,” Matano said.

Matano said the official had formed a habit of castigating him each time the team’s performance fell way below expectations.

“Unfortunately, there are people who don’t trust me. I shouldn’t be crucified when the team is down. Football is full of dynamics and there are days the team won’t be performing well. But at the end of the day it’s a marathon and what’s important is the final outcome.

Matano insinuated he would consider bolting away should push come to shove.

“One would rather feed on unfried Kale in a friendly and conducive environment than having fried chicken in a hostile one,” Matano said.

Matano has been linked with a move to Kenya Police.

The tactician was under pressure at the beginning of the season following Tusker’s poor performance. Reports were rife that he was living on borrowed time at the East Africa Breweries Limited sponsored club.

Responding to Matano’s statements, Tusker’s Chairman Dan Aduda said it is normal for coaches to be under pressure when their teams do not perform well.

He said if it is true that Matano was being disrespected, then he would not have won the league.

“Have you seen a team where a coach is not under pressure when they are not performing well,” posed Aduda.

“The players were not playing for the coach but the club and their careers. I do not think he would have delivered the title if there was disrespect in the team.”

While Tusker and Kakamega Homeboyz tied at the top of the league with 63 points, the Brewers were crowned champions thanks to a four-goal advantage.
